The initiative we are proposing in this brief document is to optimally “manage” diabetes along with the indispensable assistance of physicians and diabetology medical staff: dealing with all “normal” and “particular” situations of everyday life (sport, pregnancy, diet, work, individual rights and obligations, etc.); knowing and understanding diabetes to live healthy with a good quality of life and without useless limitations...
Glycemia? It's better to have it under SELF-MONITORING” control. Self-monitoring control, when referring to diabetes, is the control of sugar levels in the blood (glycemia) that any diabetic patient can do, even by him/herself, at any moment of the day thanks to a small instrument that is (the glucometer) readily transportable and easy to use. How, why and where is self-monitoring control done?
Diabetes: lets keep our numbers healthy What “numbers” are important to the diabetic patient? The are not only those concerning the quantities of sugar in the blood (glycemia) as one would mistakenly think, but also those indicating the level of health of the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, eyes, and peripheral nerves. We stay healthy by maintaining all of the “right numbers.” First of all lets see which ones are the most important and what they mean.
Microvascular complications of diabetes. Poor monitoring of diabetes, with constantly high levels of glycemia, can in the long run lead to an alteration of the arteries that translates into damage of the tissues they nourish. The main damage occurs with the small arteries (from this the name microangiopathy) of the eye, kidney, and nerves.
What is diabetes? This publication is the first of a series that will provide you with indications on everything about the “world of diabetes.” Lets begin with the disease. Both are characterized by the increase in glycemia levels (hyperglycemia) but with completely different causes...
Cardio and cerebral complications of diabetes hese complications are due to the arteriosclerosis process that is caused by the deposit of fat on the walls of the large arteries making them more rigid and narrower until they become completely closed. A damaged artery does not carry enough oxygen and nutrition to the tissues thus causing them suffer and possibly die..
Self-monitoring control of glycemia The possibility of measuring glycemia in a few seconds with a drop of capillary blood has revolutionized the therapy of diabetes mellitus: the importance of constantly monitoring glycemia at any given moment...
Bon appetit: a sweeter diet than you think! Diet is seen as a series of sacrifices and limitations: this is not true! Diet does not mean no eating, or always eating the same things, or sacrificing taste. It means “life style,” or in other words eating in a correct manner according to our body’s necessities.
Physical activity and sport Regular exercise is fundamental for people with diabetes: it is part of the treatment even more so than medicine! In fact, if not treated properly diabetes can facilitate the onset of arteriosclerosis: fighting sedentary habits reduces the risk of developing heart and vascular diseases.
Work and the necessity of treatment. Diabetes alone does not reduce working capacity. It is possible to properly treat diabetes while working without particular difficulty...
